What is technical SEO? A plain-English guide
Not a buzzword. The actual foundation everything else depends on.
“Technical SEO” gets used as a vague catch-all, usually in a sales pitch, rarely explained. It's not mysterious. It's a specific, checkable list of things that determine whether Google can find your pages, understand them, and trust them enough to show them. Content and backlinks matter too, but none of that helps if the technical foundation is broken.
Crawlability
Before anything else, search engines need to physically find your pages. That means a sitemap that lists them, a robots.txt file that isn't accidentally blocking the wrong sections, and internal links connecting your pages to each other so a crawler can actually navigate the site the way a visitor would.
A brilliant article on a page Google can't properly crawl or index might as well not exist.
Indexability
Being crawlable doesn't guarantee a page gets indexed. Duplicate content, thin pages with barely any text, or an accidental “noindex” tag left over from a staging environment can all keep a perfectly good page out of Google's index entirely. This is worth checking directly in Search Console rather than assuming.
Site speed and Core Web Vitals
How fast a page loads, how quickly it becomes usable, and whether content jumps around while it's loading are measured, real ranking signals, not vague best practice advice. Google calls these Core Web Vitals, and PageSpeed Insights will show you exactly where a site is losing points.
Structured data
Schema markup is a standardised way of telling search engines exactly what something is: a product with a price, an article with an author and a publish date, a local business with an address and opening hours. It doesn't guarantee better rankings on its own, but it removes ambiguity, which matters more now that AI-driven search is summarising pages rather than just linking to them.
Mobile and security basics
Google indexes the mobile version of a site by default, so a page that works beautifully on desktop and badly on a phone is being judged on the bad version. HTTPS is table stakes at this point too: a site without a valid SSL certificate gets flagged as “not secure” in the browser before a visitor even reads a word of it.
Why it matters more than people think
Content strategy and link building get the attention because they feel more like marketing. Technical SEO gets skipped because it feels like plumbing. But it's exactly that: the plumbing everything else runs through. A brilliant article on a page Google can't properly crawl or index might as well not exist.
If you're not sure where your own site actually stands on any of this, that's a straightforward thing to check properly rather than guess at.
